Welcome back to SGL, my friends! I didn’t end up doing a whole lot reading this month – I’ve been focusing instead on crochet projects in the evenings.
Watership Down by Richard Adams – Set in a once-rural landscape, a group of brave rabbits travel from their native Sandleford Warren through dangerous -WHAT- to found their own warren. Determined to survive the sure destruction of their warren, they set out to start their own, far from the intrusion of man.
~this was a delightful re-read. I like having an easy read at night and this one was just perfect. It’d been about five years since I’d first read it. I enjoy stories that are on anthropomorphic animals (animals that walk, dress and talk as humans, is a quick, easy definition), though Adams doesn’t have the rabbits in his story doing all that, like in the Redwall series. Rather, he emphasizes the rabbits’ natural tendencies while giving them a complex language, social structures, culture and humanlike reasoning. Perhaps because of this, the story is even more gripping. Hazel, Fiver and the rest that set out to form their own warren, safe from danger, is an adventure that will stay with you. Highly recommend, but not necessarily for younger readers.
The Chronicles of Narnia series by C.S. Lewis – audiobooks by Radio Theatre – From the creation of the world of Narnia to its’ end, the series follows as children are called from our world to that magical realm where Aslan appoints rulers and animals talk.
~I shared a review several years ago, here, but I do think I’ll dedicate a post to properly reviewing this series. I didn’t end up listening to the final of the series, The Last Battle, but thoroughly enjoyed listening to the other books while crocheting, cleaning, cooking, etc. It was so fun to borrow these cds, as they aren’t just audiobooks, but a more immersive experience that was delightful. There were a few voices that I didn’t feel suited the character but, setting that aside, it was done spectacularly well. Highly recommend if you can get your hands on these.
