Welcome back to SGL, friends. This month has practically flown by, hasn’t it? But then, I suppose, when do they not? Anyway, we’ve reached the end of another month and it’s time to share what I’ve read with you. If you missed my last post, it was a life and writing update!
While covering different genres, I do not read anything that has blatant sexual content. I will tell you if there is any sort of such (typically very mild and delicately put) in them and if I don’t think they’d be appropriate for young/teenage readers.
The Way of Kings (The Stormlight Archive #1) by Brandon Sanderson – It’s been centuries since the Knights Radiant fell, and even their story has been lost to time. But their Sharplates and Shardblades remain – armor and weapons that can transform ordinary people to almost invincible warriors. On Roshar, wars have been fought over and for them. On the Shattered Plains, the armies of Roshar battle against one enemy.
~It only took me about three months to read this, ha! It was long overdue for me to read the series again, as there’s a fifth book out that I’ve not read yet. I enjoyed this start to the series. Kaladin, Shallan and Dalinar’s introductions as we learn about their world of Roshar.
Emily Wilde’s Encyclopaedia of Fairies by Heather Fawcett- Cambridge professor, Emily Wilde is writing an encyclopaedia of fairies and has traveled to Hrafnsvik to study their local fairies. As she gets closer to uncovering the Hidden Ones’ secrets – she’s distracted by the arrival of her academic rival, handsome Wendell Bambleby. Bambleby does what she was unwilling and unable to – befriend the local villagers, but he also lands right in the middle of her research.
~I saw this at a bookstore and was intrigued. The cover was gorgeous and the synopsis sounded interesting. So, as I like to do, I got it from the library. It had a slow start for me but it did gain interest as the story continued. Bambleby helped a lot in this. I honestly still have mixed feelings on it – I enjoyed it and did have a hard time putting it down a couple of nights. But I struggled to connect with the main character through a lot of it, and am still questioning why certain events unfolded the way they did… there was a same-gender couple that disappointed me. It wasn’t in your face, but it still didn’t need to be. But, it was written cleanly at least. All in all, I did enjoy this book and would recommend it to some but not as an across the board recommendation.
Thrones, Dominations by Dorothy L. Sayers and Jill Paton Walsh -Did Not Finish (DNF’d). I was disappointed to not get to read much at all of this as there was inappropriate content. It was, as is my usual opinion, unnecessary. I liked Walsh’s portrayal of Lord Peter and Harriet – it felt true to Sayers’ characters. It was Lord Peter’s uncle, if I recall correctly, that made me close the book and add it to the donate pile. Disappointed.
