About Me

Hi, I’m Laura.

An self published author, avid reader, crochet addict, wife and Lyme disease warrior.

You’ll find that The Start of a Good Life (SGL) covers all of these things as I love sharing on all these topics. You’ll find monthly book reviews, historical facts that I just have to share, short stories I’ve written and my ongoing saga of editing and publishing my novels. I hope you’ll stay awhile and let me know what you think!

My Story:

My husband and I have been married for over ten years now and have settled into a camaraderie of taking care of one another, celebrating Shabbat, playing with our golden retriever and slowly renovating our home and property that we bought a few years ago.

As a teen, I was published in small poem books but in the beginning of 2025, I self-published my debut novel, Amelia! Check it out either on my website or on Amazon. I used to dream of being a published author- along with show jumping, being a baker or a businesswoman. But, the author dream is the one that stuck throughout the years.

I’ve been an avid reader since I was a child, and I feel like that love of literature has only grown as I’ve gotten older and started reading different genres. If you check out the ultimate book list page, you’ll notice that I read anything from historical fiction to children’s classics to fantasy to biographies. While covering different genres, I do not read anything that has blatant sexual content. I will tell you if there is any sort of such (typically very mild and delicately put) in them and if I don’t think they’d be appropriate for young/teenage readers.

I had chronic migraines for almost twenty years – through culinary school, working to support myself as a preschool teacher and nanny, as a newlywed and then a-not-so-newlywed. Sadly, I kept getting worse, with a long list of symptoms that made my body start shutting down. Thankfully, I was eventually diagnosed with Lyme Disease and that was the catalyst to figuring out the long road back to health. If you want to read more about that, check out my page on chronic pain. I try to share about once a year on how I’m doing, but aside from that, I don’t write very much about chronic pain any more.

I’m not able to work, but I’m using this time to grow SGL and my writing career.

I hope you enjoy following my blog and if you have any questions or book recommendations – please let me know!

~Laura
