Shabbat Shirah

11 Jan

I am excited to share this Shabbat with you all. Thank you for stopping by! The actual time to light candles is in fifteen minutes but as my OH doesn’t get off work til five or later….. we light when we sit down for dinner. I follow creative jewish mom’s blog – (http://www.creativejewishmom.com/# ) for not only is it a fun read with plenty of craft ideas, she keeps me updated of all the special dates for the Jewish people! Most of the time, I don’t have the time or materials to try her crafts but this Origami Birds craft was so simple and all it took was cutting up a piece of printing paper that I went for it!

Tonight starts Shabbat Shirah , and from my reading it is a time to read the Song of the Sea- when the people of Israel sang  as they crossed the Red Sea. The sages tell us that birds sang with the people and for this reason food is put out for the birds before Shabbat starts. It is customary to  read Parshat Beshalach (Exodus 13:17-17:16) and (Judges 4:4-5:31): the Song of Deborah.

Of course, when I texted my OH about this coming up, he says, ‘Yep’. Silly man, didn’t tell me. =)

So, day two of being migraine-relegated-to-the-couch I thought I’d try my hand at folding these cute birds.

I found  easy instructions here: http: http://www.origami-instructions.com/origami-warbler.html  – if they are easy enough for me to do , your kiddos should be able to!!! I plan on putting them around the Challah plate and candlesticks come time for candle lighting.

Shabbat Shalom,

Laura

Cool! I was given a book you might enjoy: Israel’s feasts and their fullness, by Batya Wootten. I read about the passover in it, and thought her suggestions for how to celebrate would be fun for a family to do.
